FGR Women fell to a first defeat of the season losing 2-1 at home to Torquay United Women in our first league match at Hartpury College.
It was a slow start to the game but Rovers found themselves in front on 14 minutes with a familiar face once again getting on the score sheet.
Captain Nynka Rucker did brilliantly to keep the ball in play, floating a pin point cross to the back post where Charlie Rowlands was on hand to head home her fifth of the season.
The visitors almost drew level on the half hour mark but young goalkeeper Ameliah Yarwood did brilliantly to keep Rovers ahead.
Rovers came agonisingly close to doubling their lead just moments later as Zoe Boyd brought out a good save from Emma Ayres before her second effort was cleared off the line.
That would prove costly in a frantic 5 minute spell before half time that saw goals from Tracey Cross and Daisy Selfgive Torquay a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
Into the second half and Rovers came out of the blocks quickly and came close to drawing level as Rowlands raced in on goal before her shot was palmed away for a corner.
But that wouldn’t prove to set the tone of the second 45 as Rovers put in a much better performance but couldn’t quite find a way to an equalising goal.
The defeat leaves Rovers on four points in the league ahead of our FA Cup clash against Weston Super Mare Ladies at The Bolt New Lawn next Sunday.
FGR Women Head Coach Neil Moore on the defeat: “I think it was a game of two halves. We were really slow to start but we had a chat we regrouped and the second half was all us.
“Now we look to the FA Cup, it should be really good. Hopefully we can get many fans down as we possibly can and we’ll put on a good spectacle for them.”
