Opposition: Burton Albion (A)

Here's some of the key information about the Brewers ahead of our trip to Staffordshire

September 29th 2022
James Williams

Rovers are back on the road in League One action this Saturday as we head to Staffordshire to take on Burton Albion.

FGR boss Ian Burchnall and his side will be looking to get back to winning ways after defeat last time out.

Here’s the lowdown on our upcoming opponents, the Brewers.

ABOUT THE BREWERS

Burton Albion were first founded in 1950 and spent eight years in the Birmingham League before joining the Southern League.

They currently play at the Pirelli Stadium and have done since 2005, when they moved from their former home of Eton Park. The Pirelli has an official capacity of 6,912 with both seated and standing areas.

Burton have been in the fifth tier of English football as recently as 2009 and reached a major milestone in their rise back in 2016 when they won promotion to the Championship.

The clubs nickname, the Brewers is connected to the brewing history of the town, which has widely been considered the brewing capital of the U.K over the years.

IN THE DUGOUT: DINO MAAMRIA

Burton boss Dino Maamria took over on a temporary basis at the Pirelli Stadium at the start of the month following the departure of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

The former Tunisian youth international had a long playing career in English football both in and out of Non-League most notably for Stevenage and Doncaster Rovers.

Maamria gained coaching experience with the likes Northwich Victoria, Newport County and Preston North End after retirement and became the Southport manager in 2015.

Further spells with Nuneaton Town, former club Stevenage and Oldham Athletic were to follow before he joined Burton as an assistant in January 2021.

The 48 year old and Hasselbaink enjoyed an impressive start to their tenure at the club but a poor start to this season saw the former Premier League striker leave, paving the way for Maamria to try and steady the ship.

ONE TO WATCH: DAVIS KEILLOR-DUNN

Brewers summer signing Davis Keillor-Dunn joined the club from Oldham Athletic signing on a two-year deal back in June.

The midfield maestro played for a variety of clubs during his youth years including the likes of Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Chesterfield before heading North of the border to Scotland.

After joining Scottish Premiership outfit Ross County aged 19, Keillor-Dunn impressed and eventually signed a first team contract with the Staggies.

After two years in Dingwall the 24 year old moved to Wales signing for National League Wrexham where he failed to really make an impact before heading to Oldham.

Keillor-Dunn enjoyed an impressive spell with the Latics particularly last season, as he scored 15 goals in League Two despite the sides eventual relegation.

However the 24 year old has carried that good form to his new club a he currently has four goals already this term.

Paragraph Break

FORM - LWLLL

27/08/22 – Cambridge United 4-3 Burton Albion

03/09/22 – Oxford United 2-1 Burton Albion

13/09/22 – Burton Albion 0-2 Portsmouth

17/09/22 – Exeter City 0-2 Burton Albion

24/09/22 – Shrewsbury Town 2-1 Burton Albion

LAST TIME OUT

Burton made the short journey west to take on Shrewsbury Town last Saturday but went home empty handed falling to a 2-1 defeat.

The Brewers found themselves behind inside the opening 15 minutes as Bournemouth loanee Christian Saydee did well to fire Salop ahead from the right side of the box.

Burton had some good chances to get back on level terms either side of the break as Sam Hughes’ header was saved off the line before Deji Oshilaja’s shot was well saved by Marko Marosi.

Dino Maamria’s side eventually got back into the clash just before the hour mark when Victor Adeboyejo bundled home the equaliser in front of the travelling Burton support.

But the hosts would have their winner just 10 minutes later as Tom Bayliss threaded Jordan Shipley in behind before he put it on a plate for Ryan Bowman to tap in and secure the three points.
